Privacy Policy for SwapUnits Browser Extension

Overview

SwapUnits is committed to protecting your privacy. This extension is designed to work entirely on your device with minimal data collection.

Data Collection

What We Collect

• Conversion Preferences: Your preferred target units for each category (e.g., USD→EUR) are stored locally using chrome.storage.sync
• Dark Mode Preference: Your theme choice is stored locally
• No Personal Information: We do NOT collect, transmit, or store any personal information, browsing history, or identifiable data

How Data is Stored

• All preferences are stored locally on your device using Chrome's storage API
• Data syncs across your Chrome devices if you're signed into Chrome (via Chrome's built-in sync)
• You can clear this data at any time by removing the extension

Third-Party Services

Currency Exchange Rates

• Currency conversions use the free API from exchangerate-api.com
• Only currency codes and amounts are sent (e.g., "USD to EUR, value: 100")
• No personal information is transmitted
• This service has its own privacy policy: https://www.exchangerate-api.com/terms

Other Conversions

• All other unit conversions (length, mass, temperature, etc.) are calculated locally on your device
• No data is sent to any server

Permissions Explained

The extension requests the following permissions:

• activeTab: Allows the extension to read selected text on the current page to detect units
• storage: Saves your conversion preferences locally
• contextMenus: (Future feature) Will add right-click menu options
• host_permissions (exchangerate-api.com): Required only for live currency conversion rates

Data Usage

We use your data solely to:

1. Remember your preferred conversion units
2. Provide accurate currency exchange rates
3. Maintain your dark mode preference

We do NOT:

• Sell or share your data
• Track your browsing
• Collect analytics
• Show ads
• Require account creation

Your Rights

You have the right to:

• Delete all stored data by removing the extension
• Clear preferences via the extension settings
• Use the extension without providing any personal information

Changes to This Policy

We may update this privacy policy as needed. Changes will be reflected in the "Last Updated" date above.
